Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Senator Joe Ludwig, today thanked outgoing Secretary Dr Conall O'Connell for his service in overseeing major reforms during his time with the Department.
Dr O’Connell will leave his position with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) in January after more than five years in the role.
“Dr O’Connell has played a key role in progressing major reforms within the Department,” Minister Ludwig said.
“Under Dr O’Connell’s leadership, the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has worked with the Government to commence work on a new drought policy, introduced a supply chain assurance system for live animal exports, reformed export certification, delivered important updates to our biosecurity system, and assisted with the transition of Tasmania’s forestry industry.
“In the time that he has been Secretary, DAFF has improved market access, overseen the inaugural G20 agriculture Ministers’ meeting, managed the eradication of equine influenza in partnership with the equine industry, and achieved a European wine agreement.
“Dr O’Connell has administered policies and programs that assist agriculture, fisheries and forestry to remain productive and competitive during a difficult period that’s seen changes in the global economy and Australia’s most severe drought.
“I’m grateful for Dr O’Connell’s service and the knowledge he has brought to what is an essential Government Department.”
Dr O’Connell will continue in the role until 28 January 2013.
Prior to serving as Secretary, Dr O’Connell had served in other senior roles in the public service, including with the Department of Environment and Water Resources.
On Friday the Prime Minister announced that Mr Andrew Metcalfe AO will commence as Secretary of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry next year.
“I congratulate Mr Metcalfe on his appointment and look forward to continuing to deliver these important reforms with him,” Minister Ludwig said.
Mr Metcalfe has previously served as Secretary of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.
