New Commonwealth fisheries management body appointed

The Rudd Government today announced members of the new Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) Commission.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Tony Burke said the commissioners would play an important role in overseeing the management of fisheries resources in Commonwealth waters.

Mr Glenn Hurry, AFMA’s previous managing director and interim CEO, will return as the new CEO of the Commission.

Previous directors and interim commissioners Ian Cartwright, Denise North, Professor Keith Sainsbury and Richard Stevens OAM, have been appointed as permanent part-time commissioners.

They will be joined by the newly appointed chairman, the Hon. Michael Egan, former NSW treasurer, and new commissioners Dr John Glaister, Jennifer Goddard and Elizabeth Montano.

All appointments are for a five year term beginning on 1 March 2009.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Tony Burke thanked outgoing chairman the Hon. Tony Rundle for his leadership of AFMA.

“The Rudd Government will continue working to protect the sustainability of our fisheries, to help support both jobs and the environment,” Mr Burke said.

Biographies of the AFMA Commissioners:

The Hon Michael Egan - Company Director, Chancellor of Macquarie University, Chairman of the Australia Day Council of NSW and Chairman of the Centenary Institute of Cancer Medicine. He was previously Treasurer of New South Wales, Minister of State Development and Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council.

Ian Cartwright - interim commissioner and former director of AFMA, is currently Director of Thalassa Consulting Pty Ltd and holds positions as Chair of a range of fisheries advisory committees. Previously he was Deputy Director of the Forum Fisheries Agency, Solomon Islands and Director of the Faculty of Fisheries and the Marine Environment at the Australian Maritime College.

Dr John Glaister - currently Deputy Director General of the Queensland Department of Transport and previously Chief Executive, Ministry of Fisheries, New Zealand, Deputy Director-General, Queensland Department of State Development and Innovation and Director-General, New South Wales Fisheries.

Jennifer Goddard - economist and previously Deputy Secretary, Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (PM&C). Ms Goddard held a number of senior roles within PM&C and prior to that in the Department of the Treasury. She is now a director of the Grains Research and Development Corporation and an economic consultant.

Glenn Hurry - interim CEO and former managing director of AFMA. He is also a former Executive Manager of the Fisheries and Forestry Division of the Commonwealth Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.

Elizabeth Montano - former private sector financial services lawyer and Chief Executive in the Commonwealth, Ms Montano is currently a Member of the Council of the Australian Institute of Marine Sciences (AIMS), member of the AIMS Audit Committee and Principal of a consultancy business.

Denise North - interim commissioner and former director of AFMA, is currently Chief Executive of the Insolvency Practitioners Association of Australia. Ms North was previously a consultant to AMP Capital Investors.

Professor Keith Sainsbury - interim commissioner and former director of AFMA, is currently Professor of marine system science at the University of Tasmania, Director of SainSolutions Pty Ltd, member and vice-chair of the Board of the Marine Stewardship Council and Science Advisor for the CSIRO Wealth from Oceans Flagship.

Richard Stevens OAM - interim commissioner and former director of AFMA, is currently an adviser on fisheries management and government relations. Mr Stevens was previously Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the South Australian Department of Primary Industries and Resources.
