The Rudd Government is urging young people in primary industries to apply for grants worth up to $50,000 for projects to boost their leadership skills under the Next Gen Farmers initiative.

Applications close on 9 April 2009.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Tony Burke said the grants would support future industry leaders who can help their communities meet the challenges of climate change.

“The median age of farmers is now over 50 and we’re seeing falling numbers of farmers aged under 35,” Mr Burke said.

“In my visits to rural and regional Australia, I’ve met some fantastic young farmers who will help to give the sector a great future.

“The Rudd Government wants to better support future industry leaders, which is a key focus of the Next Gen Farmers grants round.

“This is an excellent opportunity for rural youth to gain exposure on the issues facing our rural, regional and remote communities now and in the future.

“I want to encourage agriculture as a career of choice for young people, and the projects funded under the Next Gen Farmers grants round will help make this a reality.”

The grants will support activities that aim to:

  • build and share knowledge and experience
  • develop leadership and management skills
  • boost participation in primary industries
  • develop skills to contribute more effectively to government and industry decision making
  • build networks among rural, regional and remote Australians.

Activities could be held via workshops, seminars, conferences, industry events or other projects.

The funding comes from Australia’s Farming Future.
