Forestry issues discussed by Ministerial Council

Issues affecting the forestry sector were discussed at the Primary Industries Ministerial Council in Hobart in May.

The council includes state, territory and federal ministers with key responsibility for the nation’s timber industries.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Tony Burke said he had met recently with representatives of the forestry sector and continued discussions with his colleagues in Hobart.

He said the forestry sector had raised particular concerns with the Government over some building sustainability schemes.

“Australian forest products meet strict environmental and sustainability requirements yet industry is concerned that some building sustainability schemes make it difficult for these products to be used,” Mr Burke said.

“Industry is concerned these schemes can make it easier for people to use products such as concrete over sustainable Australian timber products.

“Australian timber products are certified under a number of internationally recognised schemes.

“They also underpin vital jobs in rural and regional Australia.

“We will continue working with the forestry sector to ensure we support new business opportunities and listen to industry concerns.”

The Primary Industries Ministerial Council agreed that Victoria would provide the Council with a report on its proposal to require Government-endorsed procurement and sustainability guides.

Victoria has proposed these guides should recognise the Forest Stewardship Council and Australian Forestry Standard as international third-party forest certification systems.
