Australian farmers facing financial difficulty will be assisted by a new $14.5 million short-term support program in the 2008-09 Budget.

The new Transitional Income Support program will help qualifying farmers coming off Exceptional Circumstances (EC) assistance with daily living expenses, including keeping food on the table.

It is designed to complement the $5,500 Climate Change Adjustment Program Advice and Training Grant, which provides farmers with professional advice, including improved farm planning, and training to update or acquire new skills to manage the risks of climate change, or to prepare for a career change.

“This short-term income support is designed to help farmers in financial difficulty in areas that are no longer EC-declared,” Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Tony Burke said.

“Some farmers may also need time to assess their future in agriculture, particularly if they are considering significant changes to their businesses and families.

“The $14.5 million Transitional Income Support program will provide up to 12 months’ income support for farmers who are still under financial strain.

“This will give farmers access to quality information and courses, tailored to their individual circumstances,” Mr Burke said.

“Without Transitional Income Support, farmers coming off EC payments may not have access to any other short-term welfare package.

“Rural Financial Counsellors will provide additional assistance to help farmers adapt their farm businesses, to achieve more long-term financial security,” Mr Burke said.
