Landcare volunteers and members are being encouraged to join together for the National Landcare Conference and biennial awards during Landcare Week 2012.

The first week of September is set aside to celebrate the success of the grass–roots movement and Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Senator Joe Ludwig, said the conference, supported by the Australian Government, would be a highlight.

“The theme of this year’s conference, ‘Landcare – the future in our hands’, reflects the growing interest in sustainable living and food security, as well as ensuring a productive and resilient agricultural and environmental future,” Minister Ludwig said.

“Conference registrations are now open to members of the Landcare community and natural resource professionals. I encourage people to come together to share their experiences and knowledge.

“It’s a chance for people from across Australia to discuss a wide range of issues, including the Australian Government’s Clean Energy Future plan, the recently launched National Food Plan green paper and the next phase of Caring for our Country.”

The conference program includes key note presentations and workshops from a diverse cross section of environmentalists, scientists, business people and communicators with a passion for the land.

Conference speakers include international scientist, Dr David Suzuki; environmentalist, Tim Flannery, and rugby star and best–selling author, Peter FitzSimons.

“The Australian Government is committed to Landcare and is running the conference because it recognises the importance of opportunities for networking, sharing success stories, learning from the experiences of others and developing skills for the continued success and growth of the Landcare movement,” Minister Ludwig said.

“It is also an opportunity to discuss ways to progress Landcare into the future.”
